Recommendation: Know Your Socket Size
When setting up decorative lighting, especially for indoor or outdoor seasonal displays, selecting the correct bulb size for your existing socket line is crucial for both compatibility and safety. While it can be hard to tell socket sizes apart just by looking at them, here are a few quick tips to help you identify the most common options:
1. C7 Socket (Candelabra Base / E12)
- Socket Size: 0.65 inches tall x 0.47 inches in diameter
- Quick Comparison: Similar in diameter to a dime
- Common Uses: Indoor Christmas lights, window frames, smaller decorative items, tree topper displays, Commercial Trees, 2D silhouette displays.
2. C9 Socket (Intermediate Base / E17)
- Socket Size: 0.82 inches tall x 0.54 inches in diameter
- Quick Comparison: About the size of a quarter
- Common Uses: Rooflines, Pathways, Large Trees and other perimeter lighting.
3. Medium Base (Standard Household Bulbs / E26)
- Socket Size: 1.05 inches tall x 1.03 inches in diameter
- Quick Comparison: The same base as a typical household bulb
- Common Uses: Porch lights, patio string lights, or decorative fixtures
When in doubt, measure your socket or compare it with a coin for a quick reference. A dime will sit nicely on top of a C7 socket, if it falls inside, try a quarter, which should fit a C9 socket. If the quarter also falls in, you're likely working with a medium base (E26), the same size as a regular household bulb. Choosing the right bulb size ensures a secure fit, proper electrical connection, and a stress-free lighting experience throughout the season.
