Overview: Zip Cord (Lamp Cord)
Zip Cord: A Flexible Solution for Your Lighting Needs
Zip cord is an essential component for anyone looking to enhance their lighting setup with greater customization and flexibility. This versatile wire, identical to the cord used in empty socket light lines without pre-installed sockets, offers a range of uses for creative and functional lighting projects. Here’s a comprehensive guide to zip cords and how it can elevate your lighting designs.
What is Zip Cord?
Zip cord, also known as lamp cord, is sold as lengths of wire without any plugs or sockets, making it a blank slate for your lighting needs. It’s available in:
- SPT-1 and SPT-2 Ratings: Choose the rating that matches your existing socket line for compatibility and safety.
- Color Options: Green or white wire to seamlessly match your light line.
- Lengths: 100ft, 250ft and 1000ft
This simple yet effective product provides the foundation for countless lighting applications.
Why Use Zip Cord?
Zip cord adds flexibility to your lighting setup, enabling you to:
- Hide Power Connections: Use zip cord to better conceal the cord that runs to your power source, creating a clean and professional look.
- Bridge Gaps: Create spacers for gaps in your lighting, such as spanning the distance between a roof outcrop and the main run of lights.
- Expand Your Options: It can be used to create two-pin polarized extension cords for other lighting purposes.
Key Guidelines for Safe and Effective Zip Cord Usage
While zip cord opens up new possibilities, there are a few guidelines to keep in mind:
- Maximum Run Length: Ensure the combined length of the zip cord and socket light line does not exceed 250 feet. If this limit is surpassed, use a new line with a separate power source to maintain safety and performance.
- Non-Polarized Limitations: Zip cords are useful for creating extension cords but cannot function as spacers for most stringer sets due to their non-polarized nature. (Stringer sets refer to designs with one bulb per socket, such as our 5MM Wide Angle Conical Light sets.) To address this limitation, route the zip cord to the desired locations and attach inline female connectors. This setup allows you to securely connect stringer sets to the zip cord.
- Cord Safety Guidelines: Each cord must have exactly one male plug attached. Having more than one male plug creates a significant shock hazard and increases the risk of an electrical fire. Conversely, a cord without a male plug cannot receive power, rendering it unusable.
